Camera Only Recording - No Audio in Studio Mode Editor (but present in folder)?

Description

I started a camera only recording with Cap.app and selected the iPhone Continuity Camera and a USB-C Connected Røde Wireless GO II for audio. Both were selected and recording.

Once the recording was finished, I opened the Studio Mode editor.

No Audio was visible / audible.

Once opening the Show Package Content of the .cap file, I did find the audio & video files present. But Studio Mode appears to not load it correctly?

Maybe this is specific in Camera Only mode?

Reproduction

1. Record "Camera Only" and hit pause / resume a few times during the recording.
2. Do so in Studio Mode
3. Finish the recording.
4. Studio Mode will open
5. Audio not audible.
6. Open Recording Package
7. Show Package Content
8. Find the folder with the audio/video files (they actually were both present)

Looking at the codebase and related issues, this appears to be a known problem area with multi-segment studio recordings (recordings with pause/resume).

Relevant Code

In camera-only mode, the microphone audio is still recorded to each segment independently at crates/recording/src/studio_recording.rs:1414-1436. When using crash recovery/fragmented mode (enabled by default), audio is stored as audio-input.m4a files that need to be remuxed after recording stops.

The Studio Mode editor loads audio via create_segments() in crates/editor/src/editor_instance.rs:666-675, which reads the mic field from each segment's metadata.

The recovery/remux process at crates/recording/src/recovery.rs:647-691 is responsible for transcoding the fragmented .m4a files to .ogg format and updating the metadata.

Related Issue

#1577 reported similar corruption issues with multi-segment recordings (pause/resume), which was fixed in v0.4.5. However, the symptoms you're describing (audio files present but not loading in editor) could indicate an edge case in camera-only mode where the remux process completes but the metadata isn't being updated correctly with the audio paths.

Debugging Suggestion

It would be helpful to check the cap.json metadata file inside the .cap package. Specifically, look at whether the segments[].mic field exists and points to the correct audio file path for each segment. If the files are present but the metadata is missing or has incorrect paths, that would confirm a bug in the finalization process for camera-only + multi-segment recordings.

The recording logs (usually in the .cap package as recording-logs.log) might also show any errors during the remux/finalization phase.

I’m experiencing the same issue. I recorded using Cap.app in Camera Only mode with my USB-C Røde for audio. Studio Mode does not play the audio, even though the audio files are present inside the .cap package (segment-0/audio-input.m4a). I did not use pause/resume - just a single segment. Seems like the Studio Mode editor isn’t loading the audio correctly in this mode.
