I think the commit that causes the regression should be reverted (and recommit it again when not breaking).

ok, This issue is still somewhat challenging for me. I will continue to think about it when I have time.

Created PR #8893 that will revert it, but left the new code under a #if 0 to make it easy resume this work and fix all the cases.
