I ordered an esp32-s2 without thinking much about it but after not being able to flash the chip at all I transfered another "S2" from a dev board. That fixed the issue for me.
Out of curiostiy I moved my ordered "S2" to the dev board - flashing was not possible. Another one from the ordered batch did not work either. I almost started doubting my soldering skills.
But later a colleague hinted that Espressif might have done some "extensions" to their portfolio (see Datasheet). And of course they did:

The ESP32-S2 has no flash embedded at all and a little correction of the BOM might be a good idea to include the S2F.
