Hi everyone,
Iβve been using MassCode for about two years, mostly on version 3.x.x (I canβt remember the exact minor version). I had around 6 folders of code snippets stored in the default library location (I clearly remember the path).
Recently, I tried to recommend MassCode to a friend. To demonstrate the software, I downloaded the latest release (v4.7.1) from GitHub and installed it without changing the library path. When I opened the new version, all my existing code snippets were gone β it looks like the installation automatically overwrote my old massCode.db file with a new, empty database.
I immediately stopped using the software to avoid further data loss. Hereβs what Iβve tried so far:
Checked Windows 11 Recycle Bin β nothing there.
Used βEverythingβ search tool to look for the old database or any related files β no results.
Searched manually through possible paths β still nothing.
Tried EaseUS (paid data recovery software) to recover overwritten data β unfortunately, no success.
I realize the old database may have been overwritten beyond recovery, but I want to ask:
Is there any possible backup mechanism in older versions (v3.x) that I might have missed?
Could the new version have moved or renamed the old database instead of deleting it?
Are there any other recovery methods worth trying in this situation?
I really appreciate any suggestions. Losing two years of code snippets is quite painful, but Iβd also like to help improve the software by reporting this behavior β maybe a warning or backup prompt during installation could prevent this for others.

Environment
Operating System: Windows 11 (exact build version can be provided if needed, e.g., 22H2 / 23H2)
Old MassCode Version: 3.x.x (exact minor version not remembered)
New MassCode Version: 4.7.1
Installation Method:
Old version: Standard installation, default library path unchanged
New version: Downloaded latest release (.exe installer) from GitHub, default installation, library path unchanged
Library Path (both old and new): D:\MyCodeBase_Local\massCode
Recovery attempts performed:
Checked Windows 11 Recycle Bin
Full disk search using Everything (keywords: massCode.db, massCode, .db)
Manual search in common paths (Documents, AppData, ProgramData, etc.)
Attempted recovery using EaseUS (paid data recovery software)
Additional notes:
After installing the new version, the old database appeared to be overwritten without any backup or migration prompt
No third-party backup tools were used (e.g., Windows Backup, File History)
Thank you for your time.
