Instead of the expected sttings dialogs, i have a grey square with a "close" button.

I installed an update version from github, and it's worse, the settings page doesn't respond at all outside vertical swiping.

fairphone always seems to have issues.

The fact that your node isn't connected (red crossed out icon) would appear to be the major problem.
Unless initiating the settings tab is what causes that disconnect?

The red cross icon is the battery indicator saying the economy mode is enabled.
