Switching knob/fader modes

Is there a way to make different knob assignments for a different knob modes? For example, use knobs as "Smart Knobs" in Device mode, but use them as "Master volume" in Volume mode?
The knobs sends the same midi controllers in all DAW modes, so only a way is to change their behavior via script using DAW modes report/activation messages.
How to implement this in script?

Mode switches are reported on channel 16, CC 0x9/0xA for knobs/faders. The script could maintain a global variable that stores the currently active mode. The CCs reported by the knobs/faders are independent of the mode, so the script would need to remap them to a mode-dependent and otherwise unused MIDI channel and/or range of CCs on input (and mapped in reverse on output). Additionally, all values need to be cached and sent to the keyboard again after ever mode change so that value pickup works.
