Yeah, transforming source to be mjs -compatible isn't really in the cards for many projects.

Had to use it in CJS environment.
As fast and simple workaround — just patch this package with patch-package:

I confirm I could require the plugin by replacing the npm package with the patched one (PR #9):

npm remove esbuild-plugin-babel
npm add git@github.com:schloerke/esbuild-plugin-babel#patch-2 -D

and then instead of: import babel from 'esbuild-plugin-babel',
requiring the plugin with: const babel = require('esbuild-plugin-babel')

I had to rewrite my esbuild config to ESM, only to get the error babel.config.js: Error while loading config - You appear to be using a native ECMAScript module configuration file, which is only supported when running Babel asynchronously.

I have no idea how to solve this, so yes, please add CJS support 🙏
